Sometimes you need to reflect back

Updated: May 20, 2020

1 Chronicles 16:12-17 KJV

12 Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

13 O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14 He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

15 Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;

16 Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;

17 And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,

There are moments in our life where we can become so frustrated and irritated because things may not be going as planned. Maybe your children are acting out, your spouse is complaining, money may be tight, or you just feel overwhelmed, whatever the situation your emotions are out of whack and all you can focus on is the problem or problems at hand.

I am not saying there is anything wrong because this is a natural emotion. However, it becomes a problem when we get stuck and stay in that mindset, focusing on the negative and every reason we can think of, that things will not work out. We have not changed the channel in our minds, because we are blindsided by what we see.

The current pandemic, we are facing can easily allow us to adopt a negative mindset. But if we are looking for a resolution, we must ask ourselves what problem this solves, exactly it doesn’t.

I have learned that life will have its twists and turns but we must change the channel and meditate on the good. It may be a fact that things are chaotic in your life right now, but have they always been that way. Or is this your first time experiencing a crisis? I am sure you can say that you’ve had many ups and downs.

Instead of murmuring and complaining use that same energy and meditate on the goodness of God. Remember his faithfulness.

In this passage of scriptures, I like how David was creating an atmosphere and mindset for the children of Israel to meditate on the marvelous works of God. Although, they experienced some rocky roads he wanted them to focus on the promises of God, the covenant God made with their forefathers, his protection, and everything God was doing to fulfill his promise of inheriting the land of Canaan.

When I begin to meditate on the goodness of God, I find that I no longer think about the problem I am facing. I am reminded of how faithful God has been in the past and I remember that if he did it before he will do it again. Some may say this is cliché, but it is a fact. It is impossible to please God without faith, so our faith is what we should stand on to keep us encouraged and grounded.

I can remember times when I didn’t have the financial stability that I have today, yet some way God met every one of my needs. When I was laid-off in 2017 I reflected on those challenging and difficult times as encouragement and told myself God will be that same God in 2017, and he was.

Some of us are guilty of having our testimony and victory praise when we get out of the storm, but God wants us to have a victory praise during the storm. It is easy to dance to the beat of a song when the music is playing, but God wants to see that same dance, leap and stomp when things you asked for haven’t shown up, or when the situation does not seem to get any better.

During my lay-off, I can remember that it was getting closer and closer for certain bills to become due, yet my funds were running low. That’s when I began to praise God more for what I was expecting him to do in my life. Then, of course, he came through.

This brings me to my next point. Instead of playing guessing games and wondering whether God will answer your prayers concerning your situation. Instead, pray and believe that it is already done. If you read Matthew chapter 9, the healing that Jesus did that day from the man with palsy to the two blind men, it was their faith that healed and delivered them. They could not see their breakthrough and deliverance with their natural eyes, but they saw it in the spirit and each time Jesus said: “your faith has made you whole”. What am I say? The Bible said, faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen, (Hebrews 11:1), so sometimes you have to see it in the spirit even if you can’t see it with your natural eyes.

When life towards you a curveball, go back to yesterday and reflect on every blessing and door he brought you through. Reminding yourself that the purpose and plan of God will be manifested in your life, and no weapon that is formed shall prevail. This is true I was laid-off in 2017 and that only set me up to start my own business that is still thriving today despite COVID-19.
